Genship Passing

GenShip Passing

A few years back, I was challenged to write a lyric to the┬átune of City of New Orleans. It seemed an easy and fun task but, several hours later, I had come up with an entire science fiction song. Since I’ve been working on a generation ship idea for some time, I thought I’d present this little ditty.

Riding to the City of New Orleans

On a monorail around our Mother’s Belt

Along the river gorge, with fake erosion

This forest trip is just an hour felt

Seventy years since leaving our home system

Another ten before a natural day

My shift mate is watching news beside me

All that’s really news is years away

Jeremiah Oldun has passed away

The last one to really see the Earth

Horizon to horizon, just standing waves

Made of water, golden grain or dirt

Working four of seven in open fields

This is building natural skills we’ll need

Planting, cultivating and pruning things

Husbandry of animal, plant and seed

Two more days we spend in hard formation

Centurions, we build our rugged teams

The basic team has just a threefold purpose

Given tools, we build, defend and dream

Jeremiah Oldun has passed away

The last one to really see the Earth

Horizon to horizon, just standing waves

Made of water, golden grain or dirt

The seventh day has always been for resting

Superstitious legends tell us this

Gazing at the stars, we sometimes wonder

Whether there is something there we’ve missed

Standing out on Mount Hood, I see us all

A million in our GenShip, safe from hurt

Horizons here are curves, no standing waves

Just little pools of water, grain or dirt

Jeremiah Oldun has passed away

Last one to really see the Earth

Horizon to horizon, just standing waves

Made of water, golden grain or dirt

[alternate end chorus]

Gazing ’round the VR lab, I see them

Images of Homeworld seem to flirt

Horizon to horizon, just standing waves

Made of water, golden grain or dirt
